We Have Been Receiving Many Complaints from BECE and WASSCE Candidates Against WAEC-Kofi Asare

The Executive Director, Kofi Asare of the Africa Education Watch (Eduwatch), an Education Policy Research and Advocacy Organisation posted on his Facebook page that they have been receiving many complaints from BECE and WASSCE candidates against WAEC. But, what complaints?

MR. Kofi Asare responded to complaints such as: disagreement with cancelled results, withheld results, suspicion of swapped results…and at WASSCE, changing results etc…

Mr. Asare added; some of those complaints are in the category of issues we believe an examining body cannot address due to potential Conflict of Interest. But we have always referred these allegations to WAEC via the very accusers.

I am not in any way accusing WAEC of bias; but as a human institution, to what extent can they be fair and just to their accusers?

It is international best practice that, when candidates have issues of perceived injustice with the work of an examining body, they petition an independent body to investigate and pronounce.

It is never international best practice to settle external assessment injustice issues in court at first resort. They take forever to settle, and cannot be afforded by the poor.

This is why a year ago, we appealed to the Honourable Minister of Education to establish a regulator for the assessment sector to handle such public complaints, set and enforce standards for all examining bodies, including WAEC.

Thankfully, the international pedigree of our Minister suggests he does not need a lecture on international best practices in assessment sector governance. All he needs is the political will and support to build an accountable assessment sector governance system.

We are fully aware of the fierce resistance by WAEC to escape any form of external regulation.

However, we are very optimistic our repeated calls will one day attract the consideration of Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum.

For now, candidates have no option than to appeal to the same WAEC they accuse of injustice, for justice.
