Salary of University Lecturers in Ghana Revealed by Kofi Asare

The Executive Director of Africa Education Watch, Mr. Kofi Asare after the University Teachers Association of Ghana on 10th January 2022 declared indefinite strike has revealed the salary of lecturers in Ghana.

In a post sighted on his official Facebook page on Thursday 13th January 2022, he said,

After spending 10 years in university from Level 100 to PhD, a lecturer earns GH 5,000 or less a month at entry level.” According to him the salary of the University Lecturers is equivalent to 18% of the salary of a Deputy Minister and 5% of the GRA Boss’ salary.”

Mr. Kofi Asare revealed that UTAG have been negotiating with the Government of Ghana since 2012 but to no avail. UTAG want to be restored to an entry level salary of about GH 12,000. “Should they call off the strike?” He asked the general public.

The Commission, an independent body, set up by law to adjudicate labour disputes, has ruled that the strike by the university teachers is not legitimate and directed them to return to the lecture halls to teach but the teachers say they are not going back until their issues have been resolved.

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) in a statement said “the members have unanimously resolved to continue with the withdrawal of teaching and related services until further notice.

 The various public universities in Ghana have revealed that, the indefinite strike will not affect the ongoing admissions process of level 100 students.
