About a week ago, some head teachers of basic schools across the country were complaining about shortage of chalks in schools, teachers’ notebooks, textbooks and other stationery.

The shortage, they said, is affecting teaching and learning in schools for the academic year.

The situation is so dire such that students are reportedly made to buy their own chalk to school.

However, one of the head teachers, who spoke on Adom FM’s morning showDwaso Nsem on last week Tuesday, confirmed that, they have not received any chalk since the beginning of the term.

According to them, they sometimes have to use their own personal resources to buy chalks.

“I spent close to GH¢300 on chalks and makers last term and the Capitation Grant has not been released to pay the debt,” a concerned head teacher lamented

Fortunately, Ghana Education Service has come out with a statement signed by Cassandra Twum Ampofo, the Head of Public relations for GES to address issues of shortage of chalk and Teaching and Learning Materials (TLMs) in Schools.

According to GES, the processes for procuring and supplying chalk to the schools are far advanced. Indeed, some urgent supplies have been made to areas like Western, Western North and Eastern Regions.

The Service explained that, all other Regions which need chalk will be supplied. It is also important to stress that there are in other Regions where we have unused stocks of chalk and some are being moved to areas which need some urgently.

Management of the Ghana Education Service said, they remain committed to engaging the Unions to ensure smooth running of the Service and wishes to assure the leadership that they are always welcome to discuss issues of concern to their members.
